An organisation’s primary goal is profit maximisation. To enable this, it should provide the market with a product/ service that satisfies a buyer’s want or needs. There are numerous approaches in achieving this, all of which utilise a blend of marketing variables into an overall marketing strategy. One such view draws on a categorisation of these variables into two primary sets.

Risk management is an integral part of sound organisational management. If an organisation is to accomplish its goals, it is important that it is aware of the events that may prevent it from achieving them. Events can either be risks or opportunities. Events that influence an organisation negatively in reaching its objectives are called risks. An important component of risk management is identifying opportunities that may help in the achievement of goals.

A good strategy needs to define the parameters within which to operate whilst achieving the objectives of the organisation. Tactical decisions need to be made as and when the “unknown” begins to challenge the success of the strategy. So, if strategy is so difficult to define why do we need it? It’s true to say that there many success stories where it can be argued that no strategy existed. Maybe no documented strategy existed, but the brains behind the success had a vision of what was to be achieved and the charisma to communicate it.
