This paper analyses a number of innovations trends in the banking industry against a definition and framework that should provide sufficient structure and resolution to encourage other researchers to adopt a systematic approach to the analysis of innovations. It resolves the dilemma around whether innovation is different for products and services. The research concludes that both products and services can be replaced by the notion of “the application of skills, knowledge and resources – whether embedded in a product or not”.
