Description: This State of the Practice report forms part of the research deliverables for the Process Management thread1 within the SystemicLogic Process Landscaping theme for 2004. It is the result of an exploratory study on the use of measurement techniques for software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes across various industries and regions within South Africa. The purpose of the research was to build theory in the relatively unexplored area of process implementation and use in South Africa and to provide information on future research opportunities. Analysis of the research findings offers guidelines for industry practitioners who wish to investigate SDLC measurement techniques and for researchers who wish to use this study as a foundation for ongoing research. Data was collected using the SystemicLogic State of the Practice Survey on Process and results received are from organizations operating within the following industries: - Financial Services - Asset Management - Insurance - Information Communication and Technology The survey results show that 76.19% of the organizations surveyed do not have a formal measurement process to assess the implemented processes. Of the organizations that do have a formal measurement system in place, 60% have based it on a software industry standard and 100% are using a manual measurement process. While all participants believe the measurement information to be a true reflection of the state of the processes within the organization, only 40% indicated that the measurement information is used throughout the organization. No obvious trends were identified among organizations operating within the various industries surveyed. Keywords: State, Process, Measurement, 2004
