Business strategy has been the subject of an ever- increasing number of books and articles over the past two decades. Clearly it is a very new discipline compared to say, social sciences such as economics, or the physical sciences. Perhaps it is best thought of as similar in maturity to the “science” that prevailed prior to the 16th century – the province of educated conjecture and anecdote rather than rigorous induction. Business Strategy Nevertheless, it is a subject of every day concern for executives, as well as the economy as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to frame the discipline of business strategy and business decision making in general within an overall modeling framework – a modeling framework that is as comprehensive as possible. Indeed, the perspective will be from a “model of models”. And then from this broad perspective, the implications for effective learning for the purpose of business strategy performance improvement will be examined.
